This 6 Foot Picnic Table plan is based on a time honored classic design. For the prototype, I used treated lumber for the legs and regular pine for the rest of the parts. Treated lumber for the legs because they are in contact with the ground. If kept painted, the pine will last for several years. If you're willing to spend a little extra money, you can make the whole thing from cedar.

Cedar is an excellent choice for picnic tables as it is naturally resistant to decay. Plus, it tends to be less likely to warp than the less expensive softwoods and is a little lighter in weight.

Either way, your picnic table will last a long time if well cared for.
